TikTok has announced it will discontinue its subscription streaming service, TikTok Music, effective November 28. Currently available in Indonesia, Brazil, Australia, Singapore, and Mexico, the service is being phased out to refocus efforts on the “Add to Music App.” This feature, launched last November, allows users to save songs they discover on TikTok to their favorite streaming services with ease.

Ole Obermann, TikTok’s global head of music business development, highlighted the success of the “Add to Music App,” which has facilitated hundreds of millions of track saves to partner services. He stated that closing TikTok Music will help TikTok enhance its role in promoting music listening and delivering value to artists and the music industry.

The music industry has expressed concerns about TikTok's compensation for music played on the platform. However, there is optimism that directing users to established streaming services like Spotify and Apple Music will be more beneficial for artists, given the higher payment rates offered by these platforms.

TikTok Music, which launched in July 2023 in select countries, aimed to blend music discovery with a robust streaming service. While the service promised ease in saving and sharing viral tracks, the “Add to Music App” has emerged as a more effective tool for connecting TikTok users to full-length songs on streaming services.

TikTok’s move is seen as a shift from being a competitor to streaming services, positioning itself instead as a partner in music discovery. The initiative aims to streamline the user experience, allowing music fans to enjoy their favorite tracks seamlessly.
